Thirsty Ten - News
May 10/2012
A NEW YEAR A NEW TEAM A NEW ATTITUDE
After a brief hiatus from a regular ball league, The Thirsty Ten team has be revised with
the help of a few former members a few newbies and one original.
The troops have been gathered once again and the team is ready for battle as they try to
rekindle the fire they had in the 9 years of this 21st century
We have brought in some new talent to go with the older experience Thirsty Tenners
who will help guide them in the drinking and partying ways that are legendary amongst
the leagues that have been honoured by our presence and style.
The new comers are not really aware of what they are getting themselves into but by the
time they do .. it will be too late.
Soon they will have nicknames , a fuzzy memory , tan lines , car sickness, softballitis,
And a small case of alcohol poisoning from some ball player’s homemade wine.
Hey… but its all good because we have doctors, counselors, nutritionist, english majors,
travel agents, government and health workers , multi-sport athletes and most importantly
closet alcoholics who will assist each other when a service is needed.
This year - as other years will be a blast as we keep the spirit of fun and competition as
our agenda. We are playing in a new league which offers this element throughout the year
as games are played primarily without carded umpires. (until playoffs)
Each game will bring out the FUNdamentals in us all as we hit, run ,catch, and drink.
We do try to get the team together for at least one tourney a year as Quyon seems to be
the place where most like to go due to its proximity and relaxed liquor laws.
So…. Hey to the veterans and hello to the rookies. We hope this year turns out to be
like former years and imprint great memories that will last forever.
Cheers and welcome to the Department of the Environment (DOE) LEAGUE

A Mother of a Weekend.
It was a long day with good results, as the amalgamated BLT's unified their way to a first place finish of the PHSA Heart and Stroke 3 pitch Championship in Ottawa. The tourney took place the mother's day weekend of May 12th - 13th. The BLT's ( Big Bats, Legends and Thirsty Ten) showed consist ant defence and timely batting in the quest for their 4th PHSA tournament title in 3 years. It was a solid efforts of Kandace J and Grant G that made the difference as the two raised their game to another level and showed that good defence can stop good hitting on most occasions.
Honourable mentions go to Alvaro B and Cynthia S for the steady play throughout the event. The team dynamics were at it's best when the second round opponents was set to tie up the game in the finals. Paul Br and Al B teamed up for a crucial double play to end the rally and gave us the win as the final out was a fly ball to Grant G in Left field.
Final score......10 - 8 over the Diamond Backs.
"Angels in the Outfield"
The Championship game was not without drama, suspense and divine intervention. BLT's playing coach Paul Bk and Thirsty Ten's perennial Center Field Louis A had a slight collision in the field as they jockeyed for a fly ball. Paul dove and caught the ball just as Louis was in full flight as well. Louis fell hard and was injured a bit on the play. After a few minutes on the ground Louis was helped to the bench where he shook it off came back in the game as a hitter and sent a ball over the center field fence for a HR on his next at bat. (Hey ..a good writer can't even make this stuff up).
From the Heart
Special thanks to Shawn Seary and John Turner of PHSA for raising dollars and awareness to a very important charity that we all will or have appreciated in our life time, the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
"Kareenoke" with "Cynthiasized" music
A shout out to OBriens Pub and Eatery for hosting the ball players and providing two of BLT's finest a venue to display their daring, drinking and singing talents. Cynthia decided to wind down her birthday weekend with a few pints, a few friends and couple of old favorites. Her renditions of Hey Big Spender and These Boots are Made for Walking had the bar sock hopping. Her performance on the Kareoke stage was only matched by her performance on the ball field earlier that day as she hit two dingers over the fence. (After an earlier visit to the bar to get refreshed)
Not to be outdone, BLT rookie Kareen H was offered a few selections to sing and was quite willing, however she had more interest in being a good will ambassador to the bar patrons.... and apparently there was some "Good Will Hunting" going on at a table she stopped at to get gender directions". Thank god her "ball" sense brought her back to the BLT table where a great time was had. Kareen never did get to sing a song that night but her lyrics can be read on the team website weekly and heard at each post game round up. (after a few of course).
Season Opener
We are all familiar with the old cliche, "you never get a second chance to make a first impression". After their season opener last Friday, May 2nd, the Thirsty Ten doesn't need a second chance to impress. The Thirsty Ten has enjoyed a formidable start to their season with a 15-5 victory against cross town rivals, the Brawlers.
In addition to gelling as a team, the Thirsty Ten introduced themselves as a strong defensive and offensive force collectively and individually. Although Tracey V traded her high heels in for cleats, she played first base with style, letting nothing past her. She also taught the Brawlers fielders to back up a little more when she comes up to bat.
The fielders could not have backed up far enough to stop Dan Keller. With four hits bringing in five runs, Dan put his long limbs to use. His long reach also came in handy after the game snatching up an MGD effortlessly.
The cold beverages and hot hits would not have been possible without Carl N's cooler or his steady pitching. Carl's hand assisted the majority of the team's hits and allowed players to gain confidence on and off the field.
With shiny new uniforms and a first win under the belt, confidence is one trait the Thirsty Ten will bring to their next game on Friday May 11th against formidable opponents, Hotsauce. At the second game of the season, the Thirsty Ten will have a chance to prove their strong season opener is more than just a first impression.
